Harties, the adventure capital of the North West

At the 2012 reopening of the Harties Cableway, former Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk lauded the cableway’s world-class facilities as comparable to those used in countries such as Switzerland.

Its cable-car rides and other attractions have made Harties Cableway a top adventure destination in the North West. As the longest mono-cableway in Africa, visitors are ensured of an exhilarating ride up the mountain, which rises to 1.852km at its highest point.

But the excitement doesn’t end there. Mountain Adventures, which offers fun activities in the Magaliesberg, has set up camp here, offering guided abseiling, kloofing and rock climbing.

Perhaps you prefer ziplining? Or, if you’re brave enough, why not paraglide from the mountain, after taking the cablecar up?

There are also a myriad opportunities for adventure near Harties Cableway. A short drive away is the Hartbeespoort Dam Snake & Animal Park, offering snake courses on the behaviours of these reptiles, how to approach them, as well as antivenom and other important information. You also get the chance to interact with them and other animals at the park.

Speaking of animals, Groot Verlange Horse Riding Academy and Safaris is a great choice for horse lovers. You can take part in a guided trail guide or join a one-hour  educational tour to learn more about the history of horses and communicating with them, grooming, their tack and its uses, and more. The tours can accommodate adults, children and school groups.

On the eastern shore of Hartbeespoort Dam is the Harties Water Sports Centre, which offers speedboat, tube and jet-ski rides. If all that adrenaline is too much for you, opt for a more relaxed boat cruise. The Centre also offers special cruise packages for weddings, parties or other events.

Pelinduna Adventures also offers a wide range of adventure activities, from archery, abseiling and paintballing to river rafting and rock climbing. You can even book some time away for a full-on adventure camp or opt for team-building, a children’s party, year-end function or other event.
